The Surrounding Areas
Colwall is in an area of outstanding natural beauty and lies on the western slopes
of the dramatic Malvern Hills. The ancient hills were formed approximately 310 million
years ago when continental plates collided.
The highest peak, the Worcestershire Beacon, is 1394 feet above sea level. The earthworks
on one of the hills in the range, the British Camp or Herefordshire Beacon, are
the remains of a large Iron Age hill fort.
The well chosen site covers 32 acres (13 ha) and would have controlled a pass at
the southern tip of the Malvern Hills.
